If you want a Caldera view and to be swamped by thousands of cruise ship day trippers head to Fira - Vedema will not suit. Should however you seek a bit of calmness, sophistication and a relaxed ambiance this is your Luxury Hotel for Santorini (and assuming you want to avoid the hill climbing and double the tariff at Mystique in Ioa).
With a car, which I suggest is essential, we found the location perfect for ticking off the main sights and enjoying the wonderful nearby restaurants (Metaxi Mas was our favourite) and beaches including the hotel's own facility and then returning to the hotel in its gorgeous village surrounds felt like a sanctuary.
Whilst the rooms are not overly luxurious, they compensate with a very generous size and nearly all seem to have have large courtyards or terraces and many with an Aegean sea view.
Service is first class, friendly and forever obliging and in particular Liezel who is a champion ambassador for the hotel. It seems unfair to mention some staff as all impressed without exception from housekeeping to the tireless porter/valet although we were particularly charmed by Andreas and his breakfast team including Alexandra and Helen who anticipated our orders including double shot cappuccinos each morning.
The hotel is not cheap but ultimately after five nights seemed reasonable value especially having regard to the great facilities including complimentary parking and very good breakfast with prosecco and freshly squeeze juices.
The pool area whilst not large is centrally located and again well served by ample lounges and fortunately a an abundance of fresh towels.
In the end what separates the hotel from others is the feeling of being valued and "treated" - from the invitation to a cocktail party to the daily delicious and varied snacks delivered to room late each afternoon and the detailed turn down service which also ensured an abundance of bottled water is always available.
Finally if I have two criticisms and they really more suggestions - to avoid wastage ditch the bain-maries at breakfast and offer at the table an a la carte brief menu for the service of eggs and hot items and update the pool furniture.
